Show Control

Show Control #

We have facilities in G05 to make it easier for a smaller or an individual to run all of G05 on their own or even automate all the systems to run automatically following an audio track or something simmilar.

This technique is called Show Control and it is the foundation of many of the large scale AV installations on stages, at festival and in large scale art installations.

The control connections are made using the following protocols :

  • OSC
  • Midi
  • DMX
  • SMPTE/LTC/Timecode

OSC #

OSC (Open Sound Control) is an open standard for sending messages over UDP. It is supported by many different hardware and software and can be integrated into hardware and software that you build easily and for free.

Midi #

Midi (Musical Instrument Device Interface) signals are used for communicating between musical devices such as Synths, DAWs, Controllers and Mixers. It became a standard way back in the 70s so has been superseeded by OSC for some applications at this point.

DMX #

DMX (Digital Multiplexing) signals are used by intelligent light fixtures to recieve signals from a lighting console, in this case out Mac Mini running qLab.

SMPTE/LTC/Timecode #

Timecode signals are used to keep different systems in time with eachother. For example: Resolume Arena doesn’t support multi-channel sound so we can move audio into another program that does support multi-channel. Our DAW can send out a Timecode signal (just a regular audio channel with noise like a fax machine) which can be picked up in Resolume or another program to keep it in time with our DAW. The same technique works for other Show Control software and Lighting Control Desks.

Network #

The most common of these protocols OSC works over a standard computer network. You can read more about the facility for that in G05 in the Network Switch section.
