Welcome to G05 / SIML #
Safety In G05/SIML #
G05 is a space with a lot of sophisticated equipment that if used incorrectly can be dangerous. Do not attempt to access the space without first following the steps below.
It is forbidden to hang anything in the truss, operate the winch system or in any way access the truss. This can only be accessed / operated by a member of staff.
If you have any doubts or are unsure about anything in the space, contact Rob or find a technician in the lab. #
G05 / SIML is a room in the Hatcham Church building in the south-west corner of campus. It is an immersive projection and surround-sound room that features 5 floor-to-ceiling projection screens and a 12.2 surround sound speaker system.
Already In the Space? Start HereManagement #
G05 is a Computing Department space and is managed by Robert Hall who is a Lecturer and Technician in the Computing Department. For enquiries please e-mail r.hall@gold.ac.uk.
Please bear in mind that managing this space is not my primary job role here at Goldsmiths, so sometimes other things have to take priority and I might not be the fastest to respond to e-mails. Thanks for your understanding.
Availablility #
G05 is open to students and staff from all departments on a first-come-first-server basis. It is booked every year from mid-April to mid-September for Degree Shows but is available to book for the rest of the year. We only allow bookings one week or shorter, to try and make sure the space is accessible to as many people as possible.
Given that the space is popular and gets booked up quickly, we try to prioritise bookings which make the best use of the equipment in the room. While G05 is a room with projectors and speakers, it does not make the best lecture theatre as whoever is speaking tends to block the slides.
G05 is open on weekends but it is not staffed. Depending on the project, we might ask that you pay for a member of staff to come in on the days of your booking to make sure everything runs smoothly.
Using the space #
G05 is a room with a great deal of expensive equipment that is set up very differently from the rest of the rooms on campus that use a standard lectern system from Central IT. While efforts are ongoing to try and make G05 as straightforward to use as possible, it is still a space that requires knowledge of various Live Events/Theatre Technologies to use to it’s full extent. This is why I try to have a meeting with everyone who is looking to book the space, to make sure they aren’t surprised by what they find in the space and to make sure they understand the capabilities of the space and how they will use it in their work.
